Gold metal pin with an image of Fridtjof Nansen encircled by lettering that reads, "FOR FRIHED, FOR FREMSKRIOT, FRAM! | FRIDTJOF NANSEN" ("FOR FREEDOM, FOR PROGRESS, FORWARD! | FRIDTJOF NANSEN"). His encircled portrait is edged with decorative engravings, including a scroll above labeled "CHICAGO 1897". The c-clasp pin is attached to a smaller metal piece, engraved with "SOUVENIR", with decorative engraving above. The two pieces were attached initially via two links, which are missing. Metal exhibits some tarnishing.

This pin is most likely a souvenir from a banquet in honor of Dr. Fridtjof Nansen on the 27th of November 1897. Held in The Auditorium Hotel in Chicago, over 150 people attended the banquet, which included a reception, meal, mandolin orchestra, Norwegian ladies quartet, and several toasts. Halle Steensland, the namesake of Saint Olaf College's Steensland Hall, was in attendance. - Information found in banquet booklet "In honor of Dr. Fridtjof Nansen. Auditorium, Chicago, the 27th of November, 1897" (G635.N3 I5 1897) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Dr. Fridtjof Nansen was a notable Norwegian explorer, scientist, diplomat, and humanitarian. In 1888, he received a Ph.D. in Zoology from Royal Frederick University in Norway. Following, he led arctic expeditions, including the first crossing of inland Greenland (1888) and the Fram expedition (1893–1896). In 1922, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for aiding prisoners of war and refugees.
