"Kolrosing" was a method of creating fine-line surface decoration on wood. This was done by using the tip of a belt knife to make decorative cuts, which were then rubbed with coal dust to accentuate the pattern. Such decoration was used on utilitarian objects such as spoons, bowls, boxes, and cups that were usually made of birch.
