"A "hankastaup" is a type of drinking vessel of cup type ("staup") with handles ("hanka"). A two-handled drinking vessel, it is of stave construction. The region of origin is either the Hordaland or Sogn of Fjordane province of Norway." - Description from 2006 appraisal by Mary Jo Thorsheim In Sogn, carved designs on such items were characteristically simple and geometric, as depicted in this item. Stave construction consists of staves, or wood planks, fitted to the bottom of the vessel. Roots are tied around the middle and bottom to fasten the wood planks further.
