Black band hat, or shako, with a wool top, velvet band, and leather visor. Ribbon-like straps, metal buttons, and an emblem are in dull gold. The emblem is embroidered and beaded in the form of an overlapping "S" and "O" with framing branches. The interior is partially lined with leather that reads, "Norris Olson '17", "St. Olaf", and "7 3/8". On the top of the interior is a printed maker's mark, with a crest, crown, two animal figures, and a label that reads, "...RSON... CO. [?]".
