A green beanie, or seamed cap, with "STAN" embroidered in red on the front. The cap has a red bottom on top and a red stick pin attached to the small visor. The pin's red end is shaped like a teardrop with an impressed cross on the top. Some fraying, holes, minor stains, and wear on the fabric. The stick pin is missing a cap.~root~>

From 1909 to 1969, it was a tradition at the College for first-year students to wear "Frosh beanies" or freshman caps. This cap marked the subjection of the incoming class to the sophomore class, which oversaw and often dictated first-year students in particular tasks. The beanie would eventually be discarded, either at the discretion of the sophomore class or at Saint Olaf Welcomes All Freshmen Day (S.W.A.F. Day).~root~>
