Painted gold wood and metal shovel with painted black text on the back of the shovel blade that reads, "APRIL 7, 1959 | ST. OLAF CENTER | AND | ADMINISTRATION BLDG. | CLEMENS M. GRANSKOU | PRESIDENT, ST. OLAF COLLEGE | MERLE OLSON | PRESIDENT, ST. OLAF ALUMNI | ALBERT H. ANDERSON | VICE PRESIDENT, ST. OLAF ALUMNI | ABNER HAUGEN | BOARD OF REGENTS | DAVID NELSON | PRESIDENT, ST. OLAF STUDENT BODY". "AMES | PONY" and "AMES | Since | 1774 | FEATHERWEIGHT | TEMPERED | 2" are impressed in the front of the shovel's socket. Taped on the shovel's grip is a handwritten note that reads, "Spade used in ground- | breaking for St. Olaf | Center, April 1959." "AMES | IMPROVED" and "SHOCK BAND" are impressed on the back of the shovel's socket. Paint wear and chipping are visible.
