From 1909 to 1969, it was a tradition at the College for first-year students to wear "Frosh beanies" or freshman caps. This cap marked the subjection of the incoming class to the sophomore class, which oversaw and often dictated first-year students in particular tasks. The beanie would eventually be discarded, either at the discretion of the sophomore class or at Saint Olaf Welcomes All Freshmen Day (S.W.A.F. Day). This beanie was donated with other items owned by John Sylwester, a 1961 graduate of Saint Olaf College, and his father, Erhardt Sylwester, a 1930 graduate of the College.
